Anniversary || St. Berry
Saying goodbye to the twins was never an easy thing to do, especially when Rachel didn’t know when she would see them again. With everything they’d been going through, she knew that their anniversary was going to be a time for herself and Jesse to reacquaint themselves with one another. Or at least, that was her goal. A year, one tremendous year. She couldn’t believe all that had happened since they had said ‘I do’. The twins, the battles; all of it seemed to be too grand to fit into one year yet, there they both were after it was all said and done. She’d planned all of her gifts for him perfectly, telling his cousins ahead of time what she wanted to do for Jesse and got their permission to take him back to the treehouse. It was, really, the last time that they had been Jesse and Rachel before things started to change and she wanted them to have that little respite, even if just for a day or two. With his gifts prepared and all her bags packed and ready, Rachel put everything in the living room as she waited for Jesse.
Jesse could hardly believe it had been a whole year since he and Rachel had gotten married. It seemed like only yesterday he was watching her walk up to the aisle to him and got to kiss her for the first time ever as his wife. Though he had had spectacular plans for their anniversary, he’d decided they needed something more muted to help ease the current strain between them. Going back to basics seemed like the best idea, not something lavish that would only force them to continue pretending like everything was completely okay. When he’d heard Rachel had begun making plans, he’d decided to let her take over, not wanting to ruin what she had planned. Being ready and packed as she’d told him, with her presents in his bag, he made his way downstairs to the living room, giving her a small smile. “Happy anniversary,” he said softly, moving over kiss her quickly. “I can’t believe it’s been a year. So much has happened.” He muttered in a slightly awed tone. It had been an eventful year to say the least. He wished things weren’t so difficult now. This was their first anniversary together and it was supposed to be incredibly special and romantic. “Anyway, what are we doing today?”
Course I do. And I will.
Oh really? I have a few things planned.

“That’d be nice, thanks” Kurt felt a bit relieved. He figured they wouldn’t say no, but he didn’t want them to feel like they had to take him in by asking. Jesse was volunteering their house though, which was good. Kurt was comfortable with both of them and with the twins, and he needed that right now. It’d also be nice to go to America for a little bit, considering he hadn’t been there for more than family visits in a while.
“I’ll be eating normally again soon, thank god. It’s really bad for your body when you skip meals, but when your body can’t handle a normal sized meal, there isn’t much you can do. I had a sandwich for lunch today, so I’m definitely improving. If I’m still in here when my appetite is back to normal, I’ll request food then” Kurt smiled, liking his plan.
But then the Blaine topic…Why was Jesse swearing Blaine was alive? Was that all in Kurt’s head too? Was Jesse really saying something totally different? Kurt covered his ears with his hands, but Jesse finished speaking right as he did so. It wasn’t very effective. He placed his hands back in his lap “No…” He whispered, blinking a few times. He was obviously upset about what they were talking about “I know you wouldn’t lie to me, but that makes no sense! He’s gone! You don’t watch someone die, spend three months trying to be okay with it, disappear for four days, and suddenly they’re alive. That’s not how it works. Everything else I remember is right. Fashion week. Finn. The fact I’m making Rachel’s wedding dress. I think I’d remember if my boyfriend was really alive. He’s not and telling myself he is isn’t going to get me out of here any faster.”
“You’re welcome to stay as long as you like.” Jesse told Kurt with a smile. Anything that would make this all easier on his best friend was fine by Jesse. It wasn’t like he and Rachel were struggling to cope with money or anything, so putting up Kurt was easy enough. And he wasn’t going to have Kurt living somewhere that would only make him worse and his recovery slower. “Yeah, I get it. I know that too much food for someone who was starved is really, really dangerous. A sandwich is good. I bet you can’t wait to have a proper meal, though.” He chuckled. The worst part about being in hospital, aside from the monotony and the uncomfort of it all, was the food. Nothing was worse than hospital food, except maybe plane food. He really didn’t want to see what those two menus would be like combined.
Jesse let out a sigh as Kurt did the childish thing and covered his ears. Waiting for him to finish, he raised his eyebrows at Kurt. He didn’t like upsetting his friend but he needed to know the truth. “Kurt,” he muttered, holding his hand out. He knew that Kurt wouldn’t appreciate contact unless it was by his own choosing. He already seemed jumpier than normal. “Reach out and touch me. Why would I be lying? What good would it do me?” He asked, before realising Kurt could think his words were being twisted. “Take my hand and let me repeat it. That way you know what I’m saying is real. After that I can show you pictures and stuff to prove it. You say months? I have pictures of him with the twins and they’re definitely not that young.”

Kurt nodded, glad for a second about how much better he was doing now than he had been a few days ago. The physical pain and the emotional pain had both been incredibly unbearable but now they both seemed much less overwhelming. Especially since he couldn’t feel the physical pain most of the time. His smile dropped, however, as Jesse asked where he was going when he got out. He dropped his gaze to the table, thinking for a few seconds. Eventually, he’d be going back to the cottage. Even with all of the memories of Blaine, it was where he’d been living. But he was willing to admit, as much as he hated having to ask for help, that he couldn’t live on his own as soon as he got out. He would need help for at least a few more days before he could go back to living alone. Finally, he looked back up at Jesse, shaking his head slightly. “I don’t know yet. I could go stay with my dad and Carole for a few days. I’m sure the house feels empty without Finn around…but if my dad saw me like this he’d try to go after the death eaters himself so…I don’t know what my plan is.” His voice didn’t have any emotion behind it as he admitted one of the many things he had to think about before he left here.
“Fine. You’ll cook dinner when I’m out. But, as much as I’d love real food I’ll have to wait. I didn’t eat anything while I was…well, you know. My body’s doing okay with small meals so far. But they’re being careful about what I eat, I guess.” He shrugged. He heard Jesse sigh and wondered what was coming…he wasn’t surprised about the topic that was brought up. “Blaine? Oh…yeah, sorry. That was weird. I think the potions made me hallucinate a little bit, it’s fine now. I’m not seeing him anymore. I didn’t mean to worry you guys. I know he’s gone.”
Jesse nodded as Kurt spoke about his dad. He knew that Burt was highly protective of his son, much like he was with the twins. If anyone had hurt his children the way the death eaters had Kurt, they wouldn’t be alive to tell the tale. It made Jesse almost envious to have a father who actually cared enough to get upset for him. His father had barely given two shits all the times he’d nearly died, and had been more than willing to let himself die without trying to fix anything. Jesse still didn’t know how he managed to convince him to even take the potion that would elongate his life. “If you ever need anywhere to stay, Rachel and I have a lot of room in Los Angeles. You’ve not been there all too often so it’s enough of a change for you. And I know Harrison and Lily would love to have you around, a nice change from boring old mummy and daddy.” He suggested, giving Kurt a smile. There was a lot of tension in the house, but Kurt’s presence may be able to fix that slightly.
“I’ll cook you the best dinner of your life.” Jesse assured him with a grin, feeling slightly more cheerful now that he could see Kurt would somewhat alright. And he doubted his best friend needed him being depressing at a time like this. Being upbeat and positive was the best thing during a recovery. “Ah. Right. Of course. I’d hate not being able to eat properly but you don’t want to get sick because of it.” He muttered with a nod. As Kurt spoke, Jesse sighed. “Kurt.” He said, leaning forward in his chair. “You trust me, right? And you trust what I say is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?” He asked. Someone needed to convince Kurt that Blaine wasn’t dead. “I swear to you, on my life, and on Harrison and Lily’s lives, that Blaine is not dead. He is as alive as you or I am. I don’t know what happened to make you think so… But I promise you. Blaine is not dead.” He hoped swearing on the twins lives would at least show Kurt how serious he was about it.

“I’m better than I was the last time you saw me.” Kurt teased, although his words felt heavier to him than he’d expected. He laughed nervously before turning sightly to face Jesse more. “I’m good. My strength’s coming back and all of that. I can walk a bit and the pain’s not as bad when the potions wear off. So I’m hoping they let me out soon.” His explanation was much more upbeat than his joke had sounded, which was good. He was glad his body was bouncing back and that he’d be back to his normal self in no time.
He didn’t really know what else to say. He was sure Jesse would bring up the emotional side of things and he didn’t want to go there. Not about how he’d acted like Blaine was alive for a couple days, not about what happened in the basement, not about anything. Kurt liked to pretend he was distracting himself from that fairly well. Even if he still couldn’t close his eyes for more than a couple seconds or stop himself from flinching when the nurses touched him. “Rachel said that once I’m out I’m coming over and she’s cooking me some real food” Kurt explained with a smile.
Jesse tried not to look too grim as Kurt started speaking. He remembered what he’d been liked when he’d picked him up, how he’d whimpered for him to carry him not Blaine and had looked so in pain. As he continued, though, Jesse nodded, allowing a small smile to creep onto his face. “I’m glad. I hate seeing you hurt. Where are you going to go once you’re out?” he asked, tilting his head for a moment. If Kurt was so convinced of Blaine’s death, he didn’t know how he was going to handle returning to the cottage. Los Angeles without Rachel would hurt too much, and the fact that Blaine wasn’t actually dead made it all a little bit more difficult.
How they were going to convince Kurt that Blaine was real and most definitely alive was a tricky one, but Jesse was determined to ensure that Kurt and Blaine would be happy again eventually. “I cook better than Rachel. You don’t want her to land you back in here with her rubbish food.” He teased, chuckling slightly. “I can make you something proper if you like. I could even bring it in for you.” He suggested, before sighing. “You know, we should probably discuss the giant, sockless elephant in the room, Kurt.”

Kurt’s recovery was moving along pretty quickly, but not as quickly as he would have liked. He was regularly eating, although he still couldn’t eat a full meal at once, and he was even walking around a little. He liked being able to walk around, as now he could finally leave his hospital bed. Besides, it was one step closer to going home.
But he wasn’t sure where he was going when he could get out of here. He couldn’t go back to the cottage, and he wasn’t sure if anyone would be able to come stay there for a few days. Well…Rachel probably could. He was sure someone would be able to help him for a little bit until he was fully on his feet again. Especially in Blaine’s absence
Blaine…had he really convinced himself for a couple days that his boyfriend was alive? He was losing it, and he needed to pretend he wasn’t going crazy long enough to get out of St. Mungo’s. Hospitals held too many bad memories for Kurt, between his mom’s death and Blaine’s death, and he was starting to feel the pain from all of that again. He’d dreamt of Blaine dying again last night, reminding him of reality. The real reality. How long until he had a dream about his mom?
He was pulled out of his thoughts as he heard footsteps stopping in the doorway. Ever since he’d been rescued, he was pretty alert to the noises around him. He knew why that was, but he didn’t want to think about it. He turned to face Jesse. “Hey” He smiled, relieved to have some company for the first time today. He motioned for Jesse to join him at the table he was sitting at.
Jesse had been thrown back into working after he’d taken time off to help save Kurt, and had therefore been unable to get away and see his friend at St. Mungo’s. He knew Kurt was in bad shape - still convinced Blaine was dead - so he was slightly worried what state he’d be in when he saw him. They’d only owled briefly, in which Jesse had learnt more about Kurt’s capture, and that scared him even more for his best friend’s health. Still, he’d managed to get the afternoon off work and had decided it was high time he visited Kurt. He figured he’d need a friend.
Apparating to St. Mungo’s, Jesse went up to the desk to find out which floor he was on before making his way up there. He hated hospitals, but St. Mungo’s especially due to all the upset that this place had harboured in previous visits. Nothing good ever happened in hospitals. Locating Kurt’s room after a bit of hunting, he gave his best friend a smile as he walked in the door. “Afternoon, Kurt,” he greeted, moving to sit down as Kurt had commanded. Taking in the sight of his friend, he bit his lip when he realised how beaten up he was. “So how are you feeling?” He asked, leaning back in his chair as he kept his gaze on Kurt. He was just relieved to see that he was alive.
